2017 Fiat 124 Spider

When the new Miata has been released on the market, Mazda also announced that the car has been made in cooperation with Fiat, meaning that the platform would also spawn an Italian convertible. Well, the wait has been over ever since the end of 2015 when the all new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider has been first showcased to the public and just as the rumors said, the car basically is a version of the Miata with a different engine and a rather more charismatic look.

However, we are positive that the 124 will sell mostly because it looks incredibly good from all angles. On top of that, it is nicely equipped and its engines are one of the more interesting out there. The only drawback we see with it is that the weight has increased by around 170 pounds and it is now more than 8 inches longer than the Miata.

New Design – Inside and Outside look

This is because the design is very different from its sibling which makes the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider a rather impressive appearance. In the front, it takes inspiration from the original Fiat Spider with its big round headlights, the long and low hood and the honey-comb front grilles. At the back it features a new design for Fiat which actually reminds us of the new Viper which is something quite unusual, especially on a car that costs less than $30,000.

Unlike the Miata, the 124 will come as standard with 17 inch rims, slightly better tires and new color options. On top of that, it will also bring to the table a lot more equipment in the base trim level which has been possible mostly thanks to its larger price tag.

Overall Length 4.054 MM (159.60 Inches)
Overall Width 1.740 MM (68.50 Inches)
Overall Height 1.233 MM (48.54 Inches)
Wheelbase 2.310 MM (90.94 Inches)

Inside the cabin, the 124 Spider will feature automatic climate control, sport seats with a different upholstery than that on the Miata, new badges as well as a standard infotainment and navigation system which supports features such as internet radio and even phone-screen mirroring. The only drawback we see here is that the car is nearly identical to the MX5 and we would have preferred if Fiat worked a bit harder inside its cabin.

The Engine range & Specs

Under the hood of the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider there is going to be a single engine available for starters and it will not be the same as that in the Miata. Instead, Fiat went with a smaller 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which they’ve taken out of the 500 Abarth. However, it order to better fit this car’s character, the engine has been tuned to offer 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, quite a bit more than the Miata.

This will be mated either to a 6 speed manual or to a 6 speed automatic and both of these will offer shorter gear ratios than those found in the Miata in order to give the car better off-the-line acceleration as well as a similar top speed thanks to the rev-happy engine.

A higher performance model under the Abarth badge is also a real possibility. This could make use of a larger 1.75 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which could easily be tuned to provide well over 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque which could become really fun in an open-top car that weighs next to nothing.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider Price & Release date

While it has been released on the market, the new model will only be available for sale starting with the summer of 2016 when it will be offered to the public for more than the base price of the US version of the Miata. This will put it at well over $25,000 which may be a rather tough sell considering its main rivals.

The biggest rival is Mazda MX-5 Miata.
