The Trax is a subcompact crossover which has been released nearly three years ago by Chevrolet in order to cash-in on the success of its sibling, the Encore. However, just like the Encore, the car suffered from poor performance and a rather unimpressive fuel consumption, so it did not sell as good as GM hoped. In order to improve its sales and give people a better car all around, it received a large update with the 2017 Chevrolet Trax which solved some of the first generation’s problems.
This means that the new model looks better and feels a lot better than before, all while not breaking the bank.
What’s new for 2017?
The car remained based on the same Gamma II platform as before but this time around it seems that GM worked a bit on its running gear. This is because the first generation, while it controlled the body-roll quite well, it wasn’t really all that great to drive with a numb steering wheel and a vague brake pedal. They said that the new generation solved these problems and the new steering column should offer a much nicer driving experience.
The Engine range & Performance
However, the biggest issue with the current model was the fact that the 1.4 liter engine was seriously underpowered for its class and despite the fact the car did offer decent fuel consumption when driven on the highway, if the engine was pushed a bit harder the fuel consumption became one of the worst in its class. The new 2017 Chevrolet Trax is unfortunately no different because it uses the same turbocharged 1.4 liter petrol engine which is offering 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. This is then mated to a 6 speed automatic which is not the fastest or the smoothest.
However, it handles well the engine on the current model and it will certainly be similar on the new generation of the car. With this powertrain, the new Trax will get to 60 MPH in around 9,4 seconds for the front wheel drive model while the all wheel drive car, due to the added weight, will hit 60 MPH in 9,8 seconds. The top speed for both versions will be 115 MPH which should be more than enough for most people.
We really hope that in the near future, the new Trax will receive GM’s updated small 1.5 liter turbocharged inline 4 engine because not only it offers more power at over 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, but it is also more efficient than the smaller version as well as it provides a smoother power delivery.
New Design – Inside and Outside look
The biggest change that came on the new 2017 Chevrolet Trax is its design, both inside and out. The exterior of the car, while it still kept the same proportions as before, is now a bit more up to date. GM achieved this by installing an entirely new front end to the car which is more in line with their current models. The car received a large hexagonal grille in its front bumper as well as a new headlight-grille assembly which makes it very similar to the new Malibu.
The wheels have also been updated with new designs and the 18 inch rims are now available even on the mid-spec LT model. The back on the other hand is nearly identical to the one before it with the only change here being a new bumper.
Inside the cabin, the car looks even better than on the outside. While some features and design notes have been kept unchanged such as its steering wheel or the center stack, the dashboard now features a new upper part which makes the car seem more spacious while all the air-vents have been changed in order to better fit the design of the car. Also, this time around the new Trax is available with GM’s latest MyLink infotainment system which can support both Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto.
2017 Chevrolet Trax Price
The bad part is that the car will only be available for sale starting with the fall of 2016 and its price will likely increase slightly over the current model’s $21,000. While this may not seem such a huge problem, the fact that the Renegade can be had for less than $19,000 will definitely become a problem in the long run for them.
The biggest competitors are Kia Soul and Nissan Juke.
