The X1 is a relatively successful car despite the fact it is based on a front wheel drive chassis. However, for some people, the car may simply not look good enough or its running gear could be just too soft. Well, it seems that BMW is going to release a rather interesting car in the next year with the 2017 BMW X2 which will basically be a differently looking X1. Just like with its sibling, the X2 will use the same UKL front wheel drive platform as some of the current BMW lower end cars or the current Mini lineup.
This doesn’t mean though that the car will be as dull to look at as the X1 and if we had to take a look at the spy shots of the camouflaged X2, we can safely assume that it will not look as the X4 or X6, two of the more unusual crossovers out there.
Under the Hood & Performance
Engine wise, the 2017 BMW X2 will likely hit the market with the same engines that are currently found in the 2 Series Active Tourer or the X1 with the added bonus of a future M model. In the US, the only engine of choice will likely be a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol unit that will offer up to 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque which will come with front or all wheel drive and with an automatic gearbox only. In Europe on the other hand, the X2 is expected to get a base 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 with 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque as well as three different diesel engines.
Unlike the X1 which still comes with 1.5 liter engines, the X2 will only receive the more powerful 2 liter units which will still provide between 150 and 228 horsepower and between 243 and up to 332 lb-ft of torque. Just like with the US version, front wheel drive will be standard while an all wheel drive will be offered as an option. However, this time around, a 6 speed manual gearbox is going to be offered on certain engine choices.
The future “M” X2 on the other hand is expected to receive a rather interesting engine. This will likely make use of a 2 liter twin-turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine that could offer as much as 330 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque which should be more than enough to pose a problem for the GLA AMG. Also, unlike the other engines in its lineup, the M model will only be offered with all wheel drive and a sportier version of the same 8 speed automatic found on the X1.
Design – short review
The design of the 2017 BMW X2 will not be as many people assumed it will be. Instead of taking a lot of the design cues found on the larger X4 and X6 models, the X2 will offer a more subdued look that will make it feel and look as a sportier version of the X1 instead of a crossover version of the 1 Series. The roof seems to get a more aggressive rake towards the back, the exhaust system will be redesigned while in the front the car will get a pair of angled headlights and larger “kidney-grille” that will make it look a lot sportier than the X1.
Inside the cabin on the other hand, the X2 is likely going to be nearly identical to the X1 with the only real expected differences here being the addition of a sport seats option and an M-styled steering wheel.
2017 BMW X2 Price
Instead, BMW is going to take a more conventional approach with the X2 which is set to please its customers and offer a more practical package that will rival the likes of the Range Rover Evoque or the current small luxury crossovers offered on the US market. The price is still unknown but considering it will basically be a higher end version of the X1, expect the X2 to be around $4,000 more expensive than its sibling on average.
Also, the X2 is likely going to offer an M version which would not only increase the price but also the performance of the car considerably. The release date will likely be at the end of this year and the car should be ready for sale by the start of 2017.
The biggest rival is Ranger Rover Evoque.
