Back in 2014 VW was releasing a high performance version of the Golf called the R400 which was supposed to offer up to 400 horsepower in the road-going version. Nearly a full year after that when most people forgot about the car, a model of the Golf R has been spied testing on the Nurburgring and it looked a bit more special than a normal version. This had much wider wheels, a wider track as well as a slightly more different body kit. Well, it seems that the model spied then was in fact the upcoming 2018 Volkswagen Golf R400 which is plan to debut in the mid of 2017 and start selling shortly after that.
More aggressive design
The exterior will receive a bit more care so the R400 will look nothing like the normal R. Instead, the car will get all new front and rear bumpers, new side-skirts, larger 19 inch rims wrapped in high performance summer tires as well as a new exhaust system which is likely going to be mounted towards the middle of the bumper, similar to what Porsche has and certainly a trow-back to the MK4 R32. Also, in order to stabilize the car at high speeds, it will feature a roof-mounted spoiler, a front splitter and a large rear diffuser.
Inside the cabin, the 2018 Volkswagen Golf R400 will not be all that different from the current Golf R and in fact, most of the equipment will be carried over to the higher performance version. However, the car will get a unique upholstery which will be either gray or black with stitching and accents in the color of the car. This should make for a more unique experience than in the normal Golf and together with the premium materials and the massive amount of space available, the car should become a real winner in its class.
The Engine & Spirited Performance
Despite all of these changes, the most interesting part on the upcoming 2018 Volkswagen Golf R400 is going to be its engine. This will feature the usual 2 liter TFSI turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine but this time it will be tuned in order to make up to 395 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque which would be more than any other hatchback on the market today. It would actually be more than either the A45 AMG or the Audi RS3, two of the fastest hatchbacks in the World.
The R400 will harness all that power with the help of a 6 speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox which will send the power to a Haldex-based all wheel drive system, similar to what the Audi S3 has.
However, this will likely be tweaked in order to send most of that power to the rear axle. The preliminary official numbers say that the car will hit 60 MPH in just 3.9 seconds and it will hit up to 174 MPH which is, you guessed it, faster than any other production hatchback currently on the market. Some people also said that VW might step it up a notch and offer the Golf as the R420 with more power and a bit of extra torque as well.
2018 Volkswagen Golf R400 Price
This new model is aimed directly at the current hot-hatchbacks on the market but considering the insane amounts of power it has available, it will likely end up faster than pretty much any other car in its class. This should allow VW to get a nice lead over its competitors which will certainly count in the near future.
The price of the R400 has not been set just yet but considering how much power it will provide, some rumors suggest it will start at over $45,000 which is already getting quite close to the M3.
