2018 Ford Expedition – Spy shots

The current Ford Expedition is based on a really old chassis so despite the fact it has been heavily upgraded in the last few years, it rides worse than its competitors and it is by far the worst car in terms of fuel efficiency or actual performance. In order to change that they will release an all new model with the 2018 Ford Expedition which will have little in common with the ongoing model.

The car has already been spied testing a few weeks ago and it seems to be a test mule rather than a finished product. Why we say this? Well, it seems that the model which has been spied testing is nearly identical to the F-150 in the front while the back only seems to get a rather poor bed-cover to make room for the rear seats.

Engine range

Engine wise, the 2018 Ford Expedition is bound to receive two rather than just a single engine choice. This will not only give people more options but it will also create two different versions for the car, a fuel efficiency oriented model and a higher performance version. The lesser of the two is likely going to be a 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 which will be able to provide up to 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

This is similar to the ongoing model but the new Expedition will get a massive advantage because Ford will finally give the car their all aluminum body and high strength steel chassis, so it should lose at least 500 pounds of weight over the ongoing model. The top end version will receive a 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost, similar to the current model.

However, this will be heavily upgraded so it will make closer to 500 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, or more than any other car in its class. Both of them should come as standard with Ford’s 10 speed automatic and both of them will be offered with rear or all wheel drive. The biggest selling point though will likely be its towing capabilities which will be greater than those of its competitors.

Design changes

Just as we mentioned above, the exterior design of the 2018 Ford Expedition will likely change and instead of the F-150 front end we may see something a bit more impressive. However, it they will decide to keep the design then we think that Ford will be at a disadvantage, especially since GM has better looking products than the F-150. The back will certainly receive more attention with a new glass-house as well as a different design for its tail-gate.

Inside look

Inside the cabin, instead of going for the design of the F-150, Ford might want to develop something from scratch, especially since Expedition buyers are looking at the car because it offers the abilities of a truck without looking like on. As standard it will also offer more features than before with a standard triple-zone automatic climate control unit, premium half-leather seats, Ford’s latest Sync 3 infotainment system as well as a surround audio system and all the usual safety features you would expect from a full size crossover.

2018 Ford Expedition – Price

We hope that the production model will not only get a different design in the front but it will also feature a more finished rear end with a real body around the rear seats rather than just a cover. Luckily Ford still has at least a full year until the car will be presented to the public and nearly two years until it will be available for sale.

The price should not be all that different from that of the current model which means it will likely start at roughly $46,000 or little over that.

Competitors: Cadillac Escalade & 2017 Lincoln Navigator.
