2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 – spy photos

According to the latest reports the new LT4 turbocharged engine will be under the bonnet of the upcoming 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. In order to change that and become a true competitor for Ford once again, they are expected to release at least two high performance versions of the car, one of them being the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. GM is currently lagging behind Ford with the release of the Chevrolet Camaro which arrived on the market nearly a full year after the Mustang.

While Ford is already releasing high performance versions of their car, GM has been left with only the base versions of the Camaro which really hurts their sales. Just like with the previous model, this will be the most powerful version of the lot and it will be aimed directly at the Mustang GT500.

Powertrain & Specs

Engine wise, the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will not feature an exotic powertrain like some rumors said a few months ago. Instead, our best bet would go on the same engine that powers the Z06 Corvette. This all aluminum 6.2 liter V8 is boosted by a roots-type blower which will allow it to deliver up to 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, not as much as the upcoming Mustang or the Hellcat models but enough to become the most powerful Camaro ever made.

A 6 speed manual will likely continue to be available as standard but instead of the old 6 speed automatic GM will not install on the car an 8 speed automatic gearbox which should handle the engine a bit better. Early performance rumors suggest that the Chevrolet  Camaro ZL1 will be able to hit 60 MPH in around 3.5 seconds and it will easily hit more than 195 MPH. These numbers put it quite close to some European sports cars that cost a lot more than it.

Design – More agressive body

In terms of design, the upcoming ZL1 will still be based on the usual Camaro but GM will very likely add a more aggressive body kit into the mix. This will have to keep the car in check at really high speeds and it will also give it a nicer, more aggressive look. Early renders suggest that the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will feature a wide-body kit on it with large 19 inch rims wrapped in high performance tires.

A small spoiler could also be added in the back while the front of the car will receive a carbon fiber splitter as well as slightly larger air-intakes in order to cool the new engine.

Inside the cabin the car will feature all the usual features of the base Camaro such as automatic climate control, GM’s infotainment and satellite navigation unit as well as a rather spacious cabin. On top of that, the ZL1 is going to get Recaro seats in the front, a strut-bar in the back instead of the usual seats as well as a different steering wheel which rumors say it will come from the Corvette. Also, the car should feature a head-up display as standard as well as a customized upholstery.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Price

Just like with the current model, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is going to use the same chassis as before but most other features will be upgraded. The running gear is going to be all new, the car will get a new engine and it will look more menacing. All of these are expected to be released on the car in the late 2017 and it should be ready for sale soon after that.

The price will unfortunately not be the same as that of the discontinued model and instead GM will give it a higher price-tag due to the amount of work they put into the car which means it may cost up to $65,000 or more, coming quite close to the Corvette.

The biggest rivals are Dodge Challenger Hellcat and Ford Shelby GT.
