2017 Tesla Model 3 – debut in March 2016

The new 2017 Tesla Model 3 coming very soon. Tesla currently is the biggest electric car manufacturer in the World mostly because they are the first company to provide an electric car which has a usable range rather than the city range most other manufacturers were offering prior to them.

The Model S is their first successful sedan and the first electric car to ever break the 300 miles of range. However, the Model S is quite expensive at more than $70,000 and on top of that, it is not the most reliable car on the market. In order to appeal to a broader audience and allow their company to grow even further, Tesla decided to release a cheaper car to compete with the likes of BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and all the other executive sedans out there.

2017 Tesla Model 3 Release date

This model would be called the 2017 Tesla Model 3 and it was supposed to be their first car to be cheaper than $40,000. In fact, Tesla said that this car was only going to cost $35,000 when it will launch which would be extremely good for both the end customer and for the industry because it would become a first and it would force other manufacturers to do the same thing.

However, not too long ago Tesla announced that they are going to release the car in March 2016 and start building it only in 2017, meaning that the actual launch would be closer to 2018 which is still quite some time away and unfortunately, it may be just too late, especially since GM announced the Bolt.

Features and Specs

In order to keep the costs down and allow the 2017 Tesla Model 3 to cost only $35,000, the car will be only using a single engine and a smaller than usual battery pack. Early rumors suggest that the Model 3 will continue to be rear wheel drive which is perfect for those looking for a fun to drive car. However, unlike the Model S, the III will likely start at around 240 horsepower while its top of the range model could offer up to 400 horsepower.

In any case, the electric motor will likely be capable of around 450 lb-ft of torque which is more than enough for such a small car. Its battery is likely going to be a 40 kWh model for the low end model and the same 70 kWh unit from the Model S on the range topping car. This should allow for a similar range across the board with both models being capable to get past 200 miles of all electric range and it should allow for SuperCharging which will get the two batteries to 100% in less than 30 minutes, a great feature to have during long trips.

Design – predictions

In terms of design, many people thought at first that Tesla was going to build a hatchback. However, this has been dismissed some time ago and it seems that the actual production model of the 2017 Tesla Model 3 will be a sedan. The design is unfortunately unknown but there are strong rumors that suggest the Model 3 will borrow a lot of the design scheme of the Model S which would actually make a lot of sense.

Inside look

The interior of the car on the other hand will not be as luxurious or even as well equipped as that of the Model S. The good part is that Tesla announced that the car will continue to be offered with a central command unit which is going to use a smaller screen this time. Unlike the Model S, the Model 3 will offer seating for five people and it should also offer just as much luggage space but without the 2 extra seats in the trunk.

On the basis of all details, you can conclude that competitors may be BMW 3 and the upcoming Chevy Bolt.
