2017 Opel Insignia – first spy photos and the first details are here, finally. The Insignia has been first launched on the market in Europe in order to replace the aging Vectra and it actually was quite successful in doing so. Later down the road, the car has also been introduced on the US and Chinese markets under the Buick Regal brand, meaning that it was one of the first Opel models to go this far.
However, the car has been released back in 2008 and its design is starting to show its age so GM has to do something about it. While they still have not released anything official about the upcoming car, a camouflaged model has been spied not too long ago.
2017 Opel Insignia Price and Features
This model is supposedly going to be the next generation of the car, the 2017 Opel Insignia which will use a new platform, engines and it will get an all new design. The platform the car will use is going to be the modular E2XX which has already been used in a few other models. This should shave around 300 pounds or more from the current’s car weight and it should also allow the car to be slightly bigger.
This is great because it will give people more choices in its price range which should increase competition slightly. The price is likely going to stay similar to that of the current model and the car should be launched in the late 2016 or early 2017.
Design – Inside and Outside look
The spied prototype shows a lot of the features of the upcoming 2017 Opel Insignia such as part of the design scheme as well as the actual dimension of the finished product. The car will be wider, longer and taller, which is a bit unusual. In order to hide the tallness of the car, it seems that Opel will now go for a shooting brake design, similar to that of the Audi A7. This is a bold move, especially for a car which is aimed at the mainstream segment. The front end will also be more aggressive while at the back it should receive an angular design to complement that sloping roof.
The interior will certainly grow quite a bit in size and the extra width and tallness of the car should allow even the tallest people to stay comfortably, both in the front and on the back seats. The trunk should also get a small boost thanks to the new design while the materials will very likely get an update for the better. The only real drawback we see here is that the base model might lose some equipment in order to allow for the extra space and for the better materials.
The Engine range & Specs
In terms of engines, the 2017 Opel Insignia is certainly going to be one of the first GM models to receive their all new turbocharged inline 4 units. The base model is likely going to make use of a 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 with around 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque while further up the range, a slightly bigger 1.5 liter engine will offer as much as 180 horsepower. The top of the range engine will remain a 2 liter unit, but this time it will offer between 200 and 280 horsepower and up to 300 lb-ft of torque, in which case, the Insignia will come equipped with all wheel drive and an automatic gearbox.
In Europe, the car will also receive a couple of diesel engines which are expected to represent most of the sales in this market. The base diesel should be a newly developed 1.5 liter unit with around 130 horsepower while further up the range, the older 2 liter twin-turbo inline 4 with up to 195 horsepower should be carried over pretty much unchanged.
The biggest competitors are BMW Series 3 and new Jaguar XE.
