2017 Honda Ridgeline – premiere at NAIAS

It’s finally, Honda company made a premiere at 2016 Detroit Auto Show, the new¬†2017 Honda Ridgeline has been presented. Ridgeline nameplate inside Honda’s lineup isn’t that new, but after less than a decade of trying, Japanese compact pickup just failed to find its spot under the sun. Now, when compact truck market breathes with full lungs yet again, Honda has decided to revive their only truck. 2017 Honda Ridgeline will be a modern car with contemporary design and features, together with modern, efficient engine.

The Engine range & Specs

We are saying engine in singular because only Pilot’s 3.5L V-6 normally aspirated unit has been confirmed thus far. V-6 manages to deliver 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque inside the SUV, and mid-size truck could offer figures more close to 300 horses. 6-speed automatic transmission looks like the most probable choice at this early stage, and all-wheel drive is also certain. In fact, previous generation of Ridgeline pickups used to feature mandatory all-wheel drive, but it wouldn’t surprise us if Japanese decide to offer new models with two-wheel drive as well.

Furthermore, modern features like direct injection and cylinder deactivation should help Ridgeline achieve better fuel economy, and as for additional engines – it’s still too early to talk about that.

Design – Inside and Outside look

Even though last Ridgeline iterations have been pulled from the markets around couple of years ago, new version will be much more contemporary looking than them. For now, Japanese have only offered us rendering photos of their upcoming mid-size truck, and it mostly looks like a concept vehicle. That is to say, 2017 Honda Ridgeline will probably be more conventional than sleek and futuristic models from these photos. Still, that’s a large step forward compared to outdated Ridgelines of the past.

We can expect Honda’s current design language at the front, and some old features at the back, like a two-way tailgate for instance. However, let us first wait and see what official statements have to say about that.

Inside look

Interior is still a wild card. While 2017 Honda Ridgeline will certainly be modern and well-executed, we just can’t decipher its overall cabin design. We can, however state with some certainty that it will feature both cloth and leather seat upholstery and metallic accents. Furthermore, unlike previous generation models, new Ridgeline should feature a touch screen display from the get-go.

It is, however, unknown whether Japanese marque will stick with their hallmark dual-screen layout. All connectivity options will likely be included as well, and from the get-go at that. After all, Honda always manages to stay at top when tech-savviness is concerned.

Safety options

Same can be said about safety features. While nothing can be confirmed at this point, at least not with certainty, 2017 Honda Ridgeline will at least come with standard rearview camera. Apart from federally mandated rearview camera and standard batch of goodies which include anti-lock brakes, stability control and an airbag system, Honda’s compact truck will likely add trailer sway control, hill-start assist and, possibly a few other advanced systems at additional cost.

2017 Honda Ridgeline Price and MPG

Apart from the fact that 2017 Honda Ridgeline will exhibit better fuel economy numbers than its outdated predecessors, nothing more is known. If Pilot is any indicator, low twenties in mpg combined should be expected. Price range is still debatable as well, but some sources state that starting price of some $30,000 is in order. We, on the other hand, would say that Ridgeline will start from little bit less than that.

2017 Honda Ridgeline is making its way back to the U.S. market after a few years of hiatus. While it didn’t really manage to deliver stellar sales figures before, Japanese still remember good initial sales figures before the economic recession; you can bet about that.

Refreshed mid-size truck market is both more competitive and more prolific at the same time. While Ridgeline will have to pit itself against GM’s Canyonado duo, it will certainly find some breathing space thanks to its uniqueness.
