One more special edition coming, the latest 2016 Ram Heavy Duty. There are quite a few heavy duty trucks on the US market and most of these sell quite well. This is because people are looking to buy a dependable working companion which will not disappoint them when things get rough.
Ram‘s Heavy Duty line has been around for quite some time and ever since the ’80s they managed to get a step ahead of the competition thanks to their great Cummins engines which were not only more fuel efficient than the petrol powered counterparts but also more reliable and they had higher towing capacities. In order to keep their heavy duty truck line ahead of its competitors, Ram released this year a new generation which is set to become the best in its class.
2016 Ram Heavy Duty Price & Sales
The new 2016 Ram Heavy Duty comes with a slightly different engines as well as a lot of new features inside and out. Just like before, the buyer will get to choose between the 2500 model which is the quarter of a ton truck, and the 3500 model which is the one ton truck. Both of these can be had for around $35,000 or $40,000 for their respective base models which is right where their competitors are.
The trucks are already available for sale and it seems that this may be the last generation of this model which started to lose some ground and it will continue to lose, especially when the all aluminum Ford Heavy Duty series will be released next year.
Features and Design
So, what did change about the 2016 Ram Heavy Duty series? Well, it seems that Ram wanted to make their trucks easier to service and quite a bit cheaper to maintain. In order to to date, they extended the oil change cycle to 15,000 miles on their diesel engined trucks which is quite impressive. On top of that, the brake life will certainly go up thanks to their advanced exhaust brake system which is the only one of its kind in its class.
Also, in order to make their customers not worry about their trucks, Ram is now offering a five years or 100,000 miles warranty for the powertrain which is mighty impressive for a truck.
The exterior and interior of the truck on the other hand remained pretty much unchanged ever since this series has been released all the way back in 2009. There is a new top of the range model which adds a lot of luxury features such as satellite navigation, internet access, climate control, a lot of safety features such as rear blind-spot detection and an active cruise control system, a new color for the leather upholstery and even new stitching for the seats.
The Engine range & Performance
Under the hood of the 2016 Ram Heavy Duty there are the same three engines as before with only minimal changes made to them. The base model comes with a naturally aspirated 5.7 liter Hemi V8 with 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range the customer will also get the chance to get a 6.4 liter Hemi V8 with up to 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Both of these are available with an automatic gearbox and either rear or all wheel drive.
However, most buyers will want to go for the 6.7 liter inline 6 turbocharged diesel which is being manufactured by Cummins. This engine has been upgraded on the latest model to 385 horsepower and 865 lb-ft of torque on the 2500HD and up to 900 lb-ft of torque on the 3500HD, thus becoming the most powerful engine in its class.
Thanks to it, the 3500HD is now able to tow as much as 30,000 pounds which is nearly 3,000 pounds more than its closest competitor. The 2500HD also crushes its competitors with a towing capacity of nearly 18,000 pounds.
