All-new for this year, 2016 Mazda CX-3 crossover already exhibits plenty of ambition in what is B-segment or subcompact car market. Just like pretty much every new Mazda, new CX-3 features the same expressive body language which looks so good. Sadly for Japanese, most of their cars don’t get deserved attention and we wonder how will subcompact crossover fare?
2016 Mazda CX-3 Under the Hood
A single option under the hood for a subcompact doesn’t surprise us. What does surprise us, however, is its strength. Mazda plans to outfit their small SUV with 2.0L Skyactiv 4-cylinder engine which is supposed to make around 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Only available transmission will be 6-speed automatic, but both front an all-wheel drive should be available.
Estimated time for 60 mph is around 7.5 seconds. New Mazda CX-3 hits max speed at 125 mph.
Design – Inside and Outside look
As mentioned before, 2016 Mazda CX-3 crossover looks really good. It gets the same sheetmetal motion like its bigger sibling CX-5 and features the same front end fascia with pentagonal stripe grille like every new Mazda’s model. If frontal fascias between the models can’t be separated, everything becomes clear when you take a look at their respective midsections.
CX-3 is clearly smaller and shorter, and features almost non-existent rear roof pillars. Wheel arches, lower parts of bumpers and sidelines, all get plastic housing which is a common thing in the niche. Around the back, subcompact returns to house’s trademark design with trapezoidal tail-lights and badge in the middle of a tailgate.
Interior is different than we’re used seeing from the Japanese. Everything is being kept simple and minimalistic. Curved dashboard features three asymmetric circular airvents and pretty much lacks conventional instrument panel. Touch screen display pops out of the top of the hood and offers audio controls and navigation as primary features.
Materials are affordable and easy for maintenance, while top grade models get leather seats and some suede inserts in door panels. Feature list is not yet official, but we expect pretty much everything a model car in its niche offers.
This means USB port, Bluetooth technology, onboard charger and a simple sound system. Apart from standard set of airbags, stability control and anti-lock brakes, 2016 Mazda CX-3 crossover’s safety feature list might surprise you. The car offers a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, radar-based collision warning with automatic braking and adaptive cruise control. Most of compact and even mid-size crossovers don’t get this kind of tech.
2016 Mazda CX-3 Price
Even though it gets unexpectedly strong powertrain, 2016 Mazda CX-3 crossover promises to be fuel-efficient. We still don’t have any official figures to give you, but knowing Mazda, their subcompact shouldn’t fall in behind competitors. It should be affordable as well, and price range between $15,000 and $25,000 seems reasonable here.
2016 Mazda CX-3 crossover is supposed to enrich Japanese maker’s lineup with some B-segment perkiness. This subcompact promises to be very efficient, together with being a great performer. We already know that it has the looks, and rich tech list, especially safety-oriented one, should only serve to sway even more buyers to its side. After all, subcompact market is in expansion, and Mazda doesn’t want to miss the party.
