New mini SUV coming, 2016 Fiat 500X. Fiat 500X is yet another 500-version of Italian compact hatchback crossovers with great pedigree. Apart from base Fiat 500, 500L and 500e, 500X is the newest addition to this historically wealthy lineup. Mini crossover was introduced at last Paris Motor Show and will be carried over for at least two or three years which means that 2016 Fiat 500X won’t offer any significant changes.
Under the Hood
Overseas markets have the luxury of getting three distinctive engines including couple of turbo diesel ones; 1.6L and 2.0L MultiJet II 4-cylinders. Third option which is also available in the U.S. is 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine which delivers 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque that are sent to the front wheels via 6-speed manual transmission. North American markets get another option; 2.4L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder with 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque which are optionally driven through all four wheels and 9-speed automatic transmission.
All Fiat 500’s look alike, and moreover, they resemble Fiat 500’s of old. However, current models have grown in both size and refinement and now offer more room than before and 4-door layout as well. 2016 Fiat 500X has standard oval shape with corresponding front end fascia which features winged Fiat ironmark. Both headlights and available foglights have ellipsoidal shape, slightly laid back toward the fenders. Around the back, 500X executes large oval rhombus tail-lights and a chrome garnish below the tailgate badge.
Interior can be quite refined and spacious too. Many people would be surprised how this mini crossover fares against larger competitors in both these categories. You can even get special seats made of leather with suede surfaces which also offer heating options in top tiers. Pop, Easy and Lounge are conventional models’ trim levels, while off-road versions carry the monikers Trekking and Trekking Plus. Nicely rounded oval dash offers 6.5-inch touch screen display with it. Voice command, Bluetooth and 3-D navigation are also available, and so are plenty of other features.
Heavy emphasis has been put on safety as well. 2016 Fiat 500X offers long list of optional electronic features like lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot detection, rear cross path detection and full speed forward collision warning with active braking. This is pretty advanced list of safety options for a subcompact vehicle, and besides these, 500X gets all mandatory safety systems as well.
2016 Fiat 500X MPG and Price
Turbo engine is rated at 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway which stands at 28 mpg combined. Naturally aspirated engine delivers similar figures, albeit with slight discrepancies in front and all-wheel drive modes. Price will most likely be in the same range as its competitors are currently charging for their models, which means between $20,000 and $25,000, or slightly more. This edition we can expect in second half 2015. Fiat offers four models: Easy, Pop, Lounge, Trekking and Trekking Plus.
2016 Fiat 500X can’t be considered as nice refreshment as 500L is very similar car. However, new X version seems more refined and offers more features than slightly older L model. It is a fun-to-drive city subcompact hatchback which offers quite potent engines for its size and comes with average fuel economy ratings thanks to them. Similar car with this edition is Chevrolet Trax.
