New 2016 Cadillac ELR coming! Hybrid cars made a huge leap after the release of the Prius, but this was still quite a normal car. The Volt made a lot of improvements to that concept and it managed to get a fair share of the market itself.
What happens though if you do want a hybrid car but still want the luxurious interior and pedigree of an already well known luxury car manufacturer. Well, luckily the 2016 Cadillac ELR has just been announced to go into production and from the looks of it, it is going to be an extreme car, not just because it is a hybrid but because of the route Cadillac took.
Styling – Interior and Exterior
Let’s start with the design because this is what you first see on it. At 75.000 dollars you would expect an exceptional car as far as the looks go and you wouldn’t be far from the truth. It does look amazing and on par with other similar models such as BMW’s own i8. At the back, the ELR is very similar to the current model of the CTS-V and at the front it has its own look with long headlights, a big but closed front grille and a bumper with a massive front splitter.
The side skirts follow the contour of the car really nice and at the back there is a hidden exhaust on the center. The tail lights are all LED, just like the headlights. The wheels are 20 inch light alloy with high performance tires rather than the usual low rolling resistance ones.
On the interior things are just as impressive as its exterior. As standard, leather upholstery is going to be standard. There will be an included 8 inch infotainment system which will act as a satellite navigation unit and also as a control system for both the dual zone automatic climate control and also the premium audio system. Unlike other coupe cars, it will only feature four full blown seats covered in leather and adjustable so they will fit their occupants like a glove. On the dashboard, there will be leather and aluminum as standard with the option of changing the aluminum to either carbon fiber or wood.
2016 Cadillac ELR Engine
Under the hood, the 2016 Cadillac ELR is going to get the same drivetrain as the one in the Volt, but this time it will be slightly boosted when in combined mode. It will use a 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 which will be coupled to two small electric motors and a 16.7 kWh battery. If you’ll only use the electric mode, the ELR will make up to 157 horsepower and it will be able to accelerate up to 107 MPH.
If the petrol engine will also be engaged, in the Sport mode, than the 2016 Cadillac ELR will provide as much as 217 horsepower and more than 240 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to go from 0 to 60 MPH in 8.1 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of 119 MPH. It might seem low but thanks to the hybrid drivetrain, the ELR can get up to 85 MPGe in electric mode and around 37 MPG in range extender mode which is good but not as good as the Volt due to its increased weight.
2016 Cadillac ELR Price and Release date
Considering it is a car based on the Volt you would expect it to be a bit more expensive, so 50.000 dollars would seam reasonable. You would be wrong though because Cadillac is going to ask for their ELR no less than 75.000 dollars which is a massive amount of money, especially for a car with the performance of a Honda Fit. The release date is going to be in the second quarter of 2015 when it will launch alongside their new super-sport saloon.
