The new 2016 Audi SQ5 TDI has been quite successful both in Europe and also on the US market but the diesel version of the car has been a bit better received in Europe than its petrol counterpart, mostly because it was more efficient and similarly powerful.
In order to give it a last push before they will release the all new model based on the upcoming 2017 Q5, the German manufacturer released the 2016 Audi SQ5 TDI plus, an upgraded model of the SQ5 TDI which comes with a few improvements inside and out as well as a higher price tag. In fact, the new car is around $5,000 more than the older version of the SQ5 TDI which is quite substantial, especially since the model only comes with a few basic updates.
The platform as well as the running gear remained pretty much unchanged over the older model but as you would expect, the exterior and the interior as well as its engine have been updated.
Design – Inside and Outside look
On the exterior, the body kit of the older model remained unchanged which is to be expected. However, the 2016 Audi SQ5 TDI plus is now available in either a diamond black color or a unique Macaw Blue on the special edition model. On top of that, it comes with 21 inch wheels with Audi’s twin-five spoke design which really complement the car’s look.
Thanks to them, the medium size crossover looks more like a hot-hatch which is perfectly fine for us. A few other additions include fully LED lit headlights in the front, new LED tail lights in the back as well as a slightly different exhaust note.
Inside the cabin, the 2016 Audi SQ5 TDI plus comes with a leather wrapped interior which adds a silver diamond pattern on the seat’s upholstery, leather wrapped armrests on the doors as well as a more premium audio system. The Macaw Blue package also adds Nappa leather sport seats with the silver diamond pattern and Macaw Blue stitching on the seats, gear shift lever, steering wheel and floor mats for a complete look.
Just like with the other SQ5 models, the dashboard is covered in a really nice soft material while all the air vents and most of the buttons are made out of aluminum for a premium look and feel.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the 2016 Audi SQ5 TDI plus comes with the same engine as before. However, this time Audi worked on the intake system in order to boost its output, meaning that it is now capable of 340 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque which is extremely close to the X5 M50d, a bigger and more expensive car than it. The boost in the engine’s power did not do anything to the performance figures of the SQ5, meaning it still gets to 60 MPH in just around 5.1 seconds and up to a limited top speed of 155 MPH.
The good part is that the fuel consumption has been improved quite a bit with the newest model being able to get up to 35 MPG on average which is the equivalent of an average fuel consumption of just 6.6 liters per 100 km, better than most cars on the road today. The gearbox remained unchanged, so it is the same 8 speed automatic as before which sends all of the engine’s power to the standard quattro all wheel drive system.
